Welcome to the Guided Tour

This tour will give you a quick history of New York City and show you examples of the kinds of documents available in Witness to the Early American Experience. The tour is arranged in chronological order to provide a very brief overview of the history of New York City during the colonial and revolutionary periods. Each page includes a single relevant example from the thousands of documents available through this site. You can leave the tour any time when you are ready to start searching.

In addition to important documents signed by the commanding figures of the times, Witness to the Early American Experience includes documents that provide insight into the daily life of the Army. This is a receipt for 207 gallons of rum delivered to "Congressbridge" - formerly Kingsbridge - "for the use of the Army of the United States."

Phillips, Samuel, DS (Congressbridge, October 16, 1776), 2 pages.
